Artist Commentary: An ancient tradition in the Church recounts the story of a woman named Veronica who wiped the face of Jesus with a cloth, while he was carrying the Cross to Calvary. The image of his face was miraculously imprinted on the cloth. Probably her name originally derived from the Greek Berenice or Pherenike and was combined with the Latin vera to mean “True Image.” A play on words, nike meaning "victory" and ikone meaning "image."
