Artist Commentary: Darkness covers the earth. Jesus’ death cry echoes across the mount of Calvary, penetrates to the heavens and to the depths of hell. It is as if all light has been extinguished, though it is only eclipsed. As John and Mary stand still beneath the Cross, what do they see, hear, feel? Does John hear again the heart, now silenced, which only hours before beat in his ear? Does Mary hear from the depths of memory the sound of a newborn baby crying as an invisible sword penetrates her heart?
