The space within the frame is like a prison in which the central figure is confined with discomfort. Yet he does not cease to look upward. He treasures freedom with an open hand, neither seizing it nor despairing of it. This kind of prisoner keeps freedom before the eyes of his heart, and thus he remains in his innermost being a free man.
