Artist Commentary: The book of Genesis describes the creation of the world, where an angel divides "the waters above from the waters below", the infinite ocean of the heavens and the seas of the earth. This painting asks the viewer to decide which is the above and which is the below. It can be viewed from any angle. Turn it upside-down or sideways and it becomes a different work.
