Artist Commentary: The mother and the child are not reading letters on a page, but the “word” in each other’s faces. The mother of Christ is the first word Jesus sees, a face in which love and truth are perfectly in harmony. In the face of her son, Mary sees the Word of God incarnate, made from her own flesh.
