Artist Commentary: At an early age Jesus knows that he is responsible to the will of the Father, yet at the same time he must obey the two people who are his earthly parents, for this also is God’s will. As Jesus grows in age and wisdom, he learns to discern how the demands of these two dimensions of obedience are to be met. He returns to Nazareth and submits himself to the authority of Joseph and Mary. He dwells with them in obscurity for eighteen more years, and it is during these hidden years that the Saviour is prepared for his public ministry.
