Artist’s Commentary: A scene from the book of Tobit. The archangel Raphael, disguised as a man, accompanies Tobit's son Tobias on a hazardous journey, and advises him how to overcome the demon which has destroyed the seven men who have married Sarah, each bridegroom dying in turn on his wedding night. With the gall of a fish, the angel helps bring about the curing of Tobit's blindness, the banishing of the demon, and the marriage of Tobias and Sarah.
