Artist Commentary: Is the child dreaming about the man he will one day become? Or is the man dreaming about the child he once was? Here the boundless valor of the child (a quality inherent in youth) is held within the higher perspectives of wisdom and proportion (a quality more common in those of mature years). A dark shape eclipses the sun, and the child instinctively wants to fight this obliteration of light. Age and experience remind him that eclipses pass, and between the hands of the man new created light is coming into being. The dialogue between the two interpretations reminds us of the necessity of both: the darkness must be resisted, yet we must exercise prudence, remembering at all times that ultimately the darkness cannot overpower the light.
