Artist Commentary: The archangel Michael is the protector of the Church, the head of the angelic hosts, who threw Satan out of Paradise. I have painted him as a mighty warrior fending off the attacks of the devil and guarding the progress of the storm-tossed ship. Though Satan can do much damage, St. Michael is far greater, and God is infinitely great.
