Artist Commentary: A kiss, the external gesture of solidarity and love, of true friendship and fidelity, has become the very instrument of betrayal. This kiss is a "little" lie that precipitates the unspeakable torture and the death of Love himself. Though it is only love's body that will be destroyed, to rise again on the third day, there will be torment and the seeming triumph of darkness until the Resurrection. Jesus sees all the dimensions involved in Judas's apparently small and brief act, and He is stricken to the heart of his soul. Even so, he speaks to Judas, calling him to repentance. If Jesus still speaks, there is hope for Judas; it is not too late to receive forgiveness. In the end Judas decides against it, and turns away into the deeper darkness of despair.
