Artist-Writer in Residence

Artist-Writer in Residence

I have been appointed Artist and Writer in Residence at Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy, in Barry’s Bay, Ontario. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this college, some description is in order. I have been continually moved and impressed from the beginning of OLSWA’s foundation by both the outstanding quality of its scholastic education and its dynamic orthodoxy. The spirit of genuine community, enthusiasm, and generosity among the students and teachers is edifying, and these and other distinctive aspects of the Academy make it a positive sign that the new springtime of hope is not only possible but is well underway.

This is a gem of a school—one of the more or less hidden treasures of the Church in North America. It is now in its tenth year, offering a three-year program of university level courses. Presently we are working towards full accreditation and degree granting status. Our credits have been accepted at several universities. Let me say, without a whiff of Celtic hyperbole, that this extraordinary college is one of the Lord’s great works. It is founded upon, and has grown by, continuous sacrifice. It is staffed by gifted professors and administrators, all of whom are strongly committed Catholics who live what they teach. Their teaching gifts integrate intellectual and spiritual life with their own warm personalities. They are motivated by love of the young and love of Truth. Their commitment to building what the Church has called “the apostolate of intellectual charity” is a rare and beautiful thing in these times. Sacrifice brings forth a harvest of fruitfulness, and this new college is very fruitful indeed.
